Create a new document with a white background approximately
800px x 800px.
Select the custom shape tool and draw a basic shape. Here I've used 'blob
1'.

Step 02
Copy the layer (always useful if you make a mistake) then Rasterize the
layer copy .

Step 03
Select the Dodge tool from the tools menu

Step 04
Set the exposure to somewhere between 20% and 45%.
The lower the exposure the more you will need to work the area with the
dodge tool.

Step 05
Select the Highlights option from the Range drop-down menu.

Step 06
Now it is time to begin working on the shape with the highlight tool
(the blue arrow is to show the direction of the light).
Draw the tool over the areas you wish to highlight.

To make a good shape with airbrushing you mustn't forget the shadows!

Hold down the ALT key while using the highlight tool and it will draw
shadows. This saves continually clicking to change between shadow and
highlight from the Range menu.
By working between highlights and shadows it is possible to quickly build
a reasonable looking 3D shape.
Step 07
Burn in a few key highlights wherever you think is appropriate to the
shape being worked upon.

The finished product - a reasonable 3D shape.
